I apologize for the late post- I was a bridesmaid in my friends wedding on Friday. Although I had a great time, I missed the children so much and thought about them the whole time I was away!
Even though I wasn't in school on Friday we still had quite a busy week learning and creating :)
In Fundations, we read "Gregory the Terrible Eater." We made predictions about what might happen next as I read the story and discussed the characters, setting, and main events. The children really enjoyed this story! Take a look at their hard work recalling the events in the story below :)
In Math, we had some fun solving number stories using calculators. Of course, I let the children play with their calculators before the lesson began. Some of them wrote their phone numbers into their calculators while others came up with the "biggest number in the word."
After some calculator exploration, I told an addition number story: I had 6 lollipops. I got 4 more. How many lollipops do I have now? I accompanied the story by recording both the numbers and symbols on the board: 6+4= while the children followed along by pressing the appropriate keys on their calculators. The children screamed out that the answer was 10! To check our work, the children drew pictures to see if they got the same solution.
After a few addition stories, I told a subtraction story: I had 8 cookies. I ate 2. How many cookies do I have left? I wrote the number sentence on the board with numbers and symbols as the children pressed the appropriate keys on their calculators. It was so refreshing to see how some of the children took it upon themselves to help out their friends that needed some assistance with finding some of the keys on their calculators. They are little teachers in the making!
1. Each pair of children was given a deck of cards. Each player took two cards from the top of the deck and placed them faceup. Players added the two numbers and took turns stating their total. (4 plus 2 equals 6!)
3 The player with the greater total took all four cards. If there was a tie, both players took two more cards and the player with the greater total took the cards from both rounds.
4 The game ended when there were not enough cards left for each player to have another turn. The player with the most cards won.
Before playing, we discuss ed strategies for solving the addition problems, which included counting on from one number, or adding on a number line.
- Writing Center- children worked on their stories in their writing folders.
- Word Work Center- children looked at the picture on the card and recorded the word in the column that matched the middle short vowel sound.
- ABC Center: children used play dough to form the letters of each digraph and practiced writing the digraphs on the lines below.
- Math Center- Children played car race with a partner.
I also want to welcome JunWoo to our PM class and thank Tiara's Mom for coming in to read a story for Tiara's birthday!
I hope you all have an awesome weekend! Enjoy the nice warm weather :) I look forward to meeting with each of you this upcoming week for parent teacher conferences.
FYI: Conferences will be held in the main office.
Take Care,
Miss Visicaro
