Even though we had a short week, Field Day was by far the most memorable and exciting part of the kiddos Kindergarten year! They LOVED all the awesome activities and even showed good sportsmanship when they didn't win. I was so impressed with the way they handled themselves :) They also really enjoyed eating in the cafeteria with the other Kindergarten classes! They are all so grown up!
In Fundations, I explained that some books have stories that are pretend or make-believe and that these stories can be about people or animals. We revisited the story, Cod Fish, and determined that it was a make-believe story. Then, I explained that other books tell us facts about things and they teach us things that are true. To explain this further, I showed them a informational book about ocean animals and told the students that this is a book that teaches us true things about sea creatures. Before reading, we looked at the front and back cover of the book and discussed the title, author and illustrator. Then I read the book and after each page, I asked them to name one true fact they have learned. They did a super job recalling the facts that intrigued them.
Also in Fundations we spent some time reading sentences and making changes to them. For example, I wrote "Tom sat on the log" on the board. Then, I had the students change the sentence to: Tom sat on the mat. Each child wrote their answer on our fun little whiteboard hands and we held them up to reveal the answer. We then tapped out the word to check the students spelling together. I continued this process of dictating changes until our sentence read "Beth sat on the box."
The children also learned two new Trick Words: "of" and "have."
In Literacy, we continued learning about seeds and plants and read The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle. After reviewing the life cycle of a plant, the children created their own life cycle sequencing picture chart. On Thursday we created our own sponge-paint sunflowers. They look really beautiful and each sunflower is unique, just like in real life. Other stories we read this week include The Sunflower House, and From Seed to Plant.
EXCITING NEWS: Some of our pupa’s have evolved into ladybugs – very exciting. We wonder what they will look like on Monday.
