In Fundations, the children practiced letters m and n by participating in class skywriting activities, using letter tiles to match letter sounds, and drilling sounds with Echo the Owl.
In Math, the children learned each other's birthdays and discovered which months had the most and fewest birthdays by creating a bar graph. Each child was given a cupcake to color and write their name on. Then, they placed their labeled birthday cupcake above the correct month. Together, we counted the number of birthdays in each month. Take a look below :)
The next day, the children rotated between three number stations. I explained that in these stations, their job was to show 5 in different ways. The children used popsicle sticks, blocks, and pattern blocks to show 5 in as many ways as they could. They really enjoyed these!
The next day, the kiddos put books in height order from shortest to tallest. They noticed the staircase the books made when they were in height order too!
Finally, we worked together to put OURSELVES in height order. We started with 2 or 3 children. We compared and ordered them until the whole class found their "place."
The children also learned how to line up objects from the bottom to compare height. They worked hard arranging their blocks so they would be in size order.
- Puzzle Center: The children worked together to put the puzzle pieces in ABC order.
- Play dough Center: The children rolled their play dough to form the number on their mat, recorded the number of dots on the ten frame and practiced writing their number.
- Math Center: The children rolled a die and counted the dots. Then, they found the number on their mat and traced it.
- ABC Center: The children spun a spinner and wrote their name the "Kindergarten Way" with the corresponding color.
- Reading Center: The children read "I Like Fall Leaves" chorally as a group. First, we used crayons to underline the color word in the story the correct color and then we filled in the sight word "I." The children learned that when "I" is a word, it must be capitalized. Then, I modeled how to track print with my finger. I instructed the children to point to each word as we read each page together. They did so well with this!
