After much anticipation, our eggs arrived on Tuesday. The farmer came to our classroom and carefully placed each egg inside of the incubator. This week we have been learning about the life cycle of a chicken. Each child has a “Chick Journal” and we predicted when the first egg will hatch. If all goes well, our adorable chicks will hatch on April 28th! We are writing facts about the chicks in the journal as well. The incubator is taking good care of the eggs for the next 21 days and we are hoping all thirteen hatch perfectly. Check out our adorable "Look Who's Hatching" Bulletin Board display in the hallway!
The children began counting by 1s. When the count reached 10, I wrote the digit 1 as the children continued the count. When the count reached 20, I erased the 1 and wrote 2 while the children continued counting. As each new decade (count of 10) was reached, I erased the previous number and wrote the next. The children quickly recognized the system I used to keep track of the count! To practice this skill, I challenged the children to write their name, color a flower, and fill in missing numbers as fast as they could as I counted. When all the papers were turned over, which signaled completion, I stopped the count. The children were so excited to "beat the clock" and improve their time for each task! This was so much fun!
The next day, your kiddos played the "Plus or Minus Game." Children took turns rolling a cube. If they rolled a + number, players added that number of counters to their boards. If they rolled a - number, players removed that number of counters from their boards (unless there were no counters on their boards). The game ended when a player covered his or her board. Take a peek below!
We also practiced AB and ABB patterns as well as sorting numbers from smallest to largest!
During Guided Reading, the children rotated through 5 centers:
- Writing Folders- Students wrote about what they did over Spring Break.
- Trick Word Pointers- Students chose a Trick Word and a book and recorded the number of times they read the Trick Word in their book.
- ABC Center- Students completed Trick Word worksheets.
- Word Work- Students said the name of the picture on the card and recorded the word in the column that matched the middle short vowel sound.
- Write the Room- Students searched for the card that matched each picture and wrote the word on the recording sheet.
Have a wonderful rest of your weekend!
Take Care,
