Not only did we celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday, but we also embraced our differences. A huge thank you to our parent volunteers for visiting us this week. We learned so much and had a great time making our class book, compliment chain and sharing what makes us unique with our friends :)
In Fundations, the children practiced identifying our trick words: and, are, and to. We echo read the following sentences below, discussed capitalization and punctuation and practiced reading with fluency.
• Jack and Martha are friends.
• The friends went to a party.
The kiddos also made words with our standard sound cards and practiced retelling. I performed "Baby Echo Finds Echo at Last" and then illustrated the story with four simple pictures. I then asked for student volunteers to use the illustrations to retell the story in their own words. The children LOVE sharing their versions and they did such a great job doing so!
During Math, we compared numbers using a double ten frame. I gave each child a "secret number," bears, and a double ten frame to place their bears on. The kiddos compared their number collections with the friends sitting at their table. We discussed who had the greatest number in the group and who had the smallest number. We also practiced writing an addition number sentence to match!
-Writing Center: How-to books
-Word Work: Children sorted real vs. nonsense words.
-Math Center: Children selected a domino, recorded the dot combination, and wrote a number sentence on the mat.
-Reading Center: Children read "just right" books
Finally, we discussed which story we liked more, "Whistle for Willie" or "A Letter to Amy." These books were both written by the same author, Ezra Jack Keats. After our discussion, the children wrote about the story they liked more and why.
Next, I collected a bag full of different artifacts found around our classroom and explained that the kiddos can use these artifacts to help them think of different how-to story ideas (i.e. milk carton= how to open a carton of milk; block=how to build a tower). This really inspired them to draw inspiration from things we have in our classroom! They were all so excited to share with me their ideas!
Well that about wraps up our week! I hope everyone has a great and restful weekend!
Take Care,
Mrs. Nork
