In Fundations, we continued working on letter sounds and “tapping” out the words. Keep practicing tapping three letter words at home (mat, sat, pig, wig, top, lot)~ practice makes perfect. Students are beginning to understand the tapping of each sound, but it is a difficult skill to blend those sounds to say the word. The children also practiced tapping/writing CVC words without even seeing the letters.
I also introduced long and short vowel sounds in words like mad/made, pin/pine, and hat/hate. Your children learned that long vowels say their name, and short vowels say the letter sound.
Finally, I told the children that they can also blend sounds together to make silly or nonsense words, which are not real words. We practiced tapping and blending nonsense words like mig, leb, and dap, which the children found hysterically funny :)
In Math we visited our “Estimation Station” to observe four sealed containers filled with noodles, cotton balls, Hershey kisses, and mini-marshmallows. Students first wrote their “best guess”- how many they thought were in each container. Only one container contained 100; others had more or less. They had such AWESOME estimates! After they made their estimates, I revealed that there were 100 Hershey kisses in container #2.
-Valentine's Day Sight Word Write the Room- Children found sight words around the room and wrote them on recording sheet.
-Word Work- Valentine's Day CVC Mats: Children looked at pictures and wrote the CVC word on the mat and read a sentence with the CVC word in it.
-Writing Center- Valentine's Day Booklets- Children filled in the missing letters/words.
-Tablets- Children read leveled texts and answered comprehension questions on tablets.
During Reading Groups, we continue to practice specific reading strategies to help with those tricky words. Encourage your child to be a “Tryin’ Lion”, “Stretchy Snake” or “Lips the Fish”, which are strategies that good readers use. Ask your child what strategy or strategies they are working on :)
Take Care,
