In Fundations, we are continuing to practice reading and "tapping out" our Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) words. In addition, your children began to manipulate sounds with rhyming patterns. To start, I made the word "cat." Then, I removed the c card and replaced it with the b to make "bat." We continued reading rhyming words, each time changing the first letter (i.e. wig/pig, hop/top, sap/tap).
In addition, the children have begun to learn the proper letter formation for the uppercase letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H. We also reviewed the corresponding lowercase letters, too.
We are working hard at identifying beginning, middle and ending sounds in our words. A great way to practice at home is to ask your child what beginning sound they hear in words we use at home, such as bed, mom, dad, window, door, or table.
In Math, I read some addition number stories to the class and the kiddos solved them by drawing circles with dry erase markers on their Addition Number Story Mats I made for them. Drawing pictures is a great strategy for our little beginners to use! We even had some time for the children to make up similar number stories for the class to model and solve :) Feel free to practice these at home with your child:
We put 2 small triangles together so they formed a larger triangle and then we changed the position of the 2 triangles so they formed a square. Then we put 2 rectangles together to make a larger rectangle.
We even created shape puzzles using our shape cards!
I explained that narratives focus on small moments - not big huge lengths of time. I told the kiddos to think of their story in terms of a watermelon- we don't want to write a big watermelon story, or even a slice, we want to write a tiny seed story. In Roller Coaster, Marla Frazee wrote all about ONE ride. Not the whole amusement park. Not the whole day. Just the one ride.
Finally, we completed the watermelon story/seed story sort.
Our Poetry Journals are a huge hit! I love hearing the children "practice" their poems during their free time :) Check out our newest poem "I'm a Little Penguin" below!
