Even though we had a short week, it was jam-packed with lots of learning and fun!
In Fundations, we continued to practice reading and "tapping out" our CVC words. This week, your children learned how to properly form the following uppercase letters: G, H, I, J K, and L. We are well on our way to finishing alphabet.
In addition, the kiddos began to manipulate sounds with rhyming patterns. To start, I made the word "cat." Then, I removed the c card and replaced it with the b to make "bat." We continued reading rhyming words, each time changing the first letter.
In Math, we started our Number Scrolls (very exciting). We will continue our scrolls by writing our numbers into the hundreds!
We put 2 small triangles together so they formed a larger triangle and then we changed the position of the 2 triangles so they formed a square. Then we put 2 rectangles together to make a larger rectangle. We even created shape puzzles using our shape cards!
I explained that narratives focus on small moments - not big huge lengths of time. I told the kiddos to think of their story in terms of a watermelon- we don't want to write a big watermelon story, or even a slice, we want to write a tiny seed story. In Roller Coaster, Marla Frazee wrote all about ONE ride. Not the whole amusement park. Not the whole day. Just the one ride.
Finally, we completed the watermelon story/seed story sort.
First, they thought of their story. Then they pictured that moment in their heads. Next, they drew what they pictured - beginning, middle, and end. We shared our stories with our classmates using our 3 pictures to guide us.
- ABC Center: Children practiced forming uppercase/lowercase letters in the "snow" (sand).
- Word Work: Children wrote the beginning sound, median sound, ending sound, and CVC word under each picture.
- Write the Room: Children recorded CVC words they found around the room.
- Math Center: Children played "Growing Train."
The next day I shared with the kiddos how to make a cloud in a jar. I filled a clear plastic container with very hot water and swirled the water around inside the container until the plastic was very warm. Then, I poured out half the water, covered it with the lid, and placed ice cubes on the lid. The children were so excited to see the cloud form in the container!
Check out this great song I shared with the children about the water cycle! It is super catchy!
