Even though we had a short week, it was jam-packed with lots of learning and fun! This week we learned all about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and spent some time sharing our dreams for the world. I was super impressed with the sweet dreams they came up with including sharing, playing nicely with others, picking up trash, helping others, etc. I told the children that Martin would be very happy with their dreams!
In Fundations, we are continuing to practice reading and "tapping out" our CVC words. To change it up this week, I called three children up to the front of the room and gave them each a vest to wear with a letter inside the front pocket. I challenged them to each say the letter sound in their vest and then blend the word to reveal the CVC word that all three children standing next to each other made. They even got to use our classroom microphone! They LOVED this! It was a great opportunity for the children to shine!
This week, your children learned how to properly form the following uppercase letters: K, L, M, N, O, and P :) We are well on our way to finishing alphabet.
In Math, we practiced measuring with standard and nonstandard measurement. I demonstrated how to measure the edge of our rug by walking along it, placing my feet heel to toe. We counted to the closest number of feet. Next, I called on a few children to walk slowly along the rug while the rest of the children counted the number of steps. We also discussed how we might measure a vertical length (table height). I told them they would make a cutout foot for measuring. After they traced and cut out their foot, they used their cutout feet to measure objects in the room. They measured just about EVERYTHING in our classroom. Take a peak below!
I held up a child's cutout foot next to the standard foot and we compared the length of the two of them noting that the standard foot was significantly larger just like the King's foot in the story. Then, we worked together to make two bed outlines, each 6 units by 4 units. For the first outline, we used one child's cutout foot to mark off the length and then used tape to mark the outline of the bed. For the second, we used the standard foot. We marked the outline of this bed by laying the standard foot cutouts end to end. We then discussed the reasons for the different-sized beds. The best part of this lesson was allowing the children to lay in them! They couldn't stop giggling!
-Math Center- Children cut out and decorated symmetrical snowflakes.
-Writing Center- Children wrote a true story in their journals and drew a picture with labels.
-Word Work Center- CVC Work Mats: Children wrote the beginning sound, median sound, ending sound, and CVC word under each picture.
-ABC Center- Children used Fundations whiteboards to practice their upper and lowercase letters.
