In Fundations, we wrapped up Unit 2 by completing the rest of the uppercase letters (S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z) and reviewing how to tap out and blend CVC words with an emphasis on the vowels (the trickiest sounds to remember!) If you have some free time this weekend, create CVC words with your child, remembering to change the vowel each time. For example, start with "mat" and change it to "met" and so forth.
To change it up this week, I challenged the children to build CVC words from a collection of letters I displayed. They LOVED this! It was a great opportunity for the children to shine!
The children watched as I selected children and tried to figure out what common attribute, or rule, I used to "catch" my fish. They did a really great job with this!
The next day, I presented the following situation:
- I went to an amusement park, and there was a ride with a sign that said, "You must be as tall as this sign to ride." I wondered if any of you would be tall enough to ride, but the sign did not have any numbers or measurements on it. I needed a way to remember and describe how tall the sign was. I did not have any string, but I found some stick-on notes in my bag and used them to measure the sign. It was as tall as 12 stick-on-notes!
- Jack and the Beanstalk Write the Room- Children found Jack and the Beanstalk story words around the room and wrote them on a recording sheet.
- Word Work: Read and Reveal CVC words.
- Rainbow Write Center: Children wrote each sight word with a pencil and then traced over the letters with markers.
- Math Center: Children worked on their number scrolls.
I also wanted to say thank you to Isabella's parents for reading a story for Chinese New Year. The children loved the story and the red envelopes! Thanks so much!
Also, a huge thank you to Yuvraj's mother for coming in a reading a story for Yuvraj's birthday. We love when guest readers come in!
