I feel as though it has been forever since I posted on here! I hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable break and a very Happy New Year! I know I did :) Even though it was hard getting up this past Monday, it was all worth it when I was welcomed by your children's smiling faces! Surprisingly, they seemed excited to be back in school!
To start off the week, I reintroduced "tapping" and blending CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) words to the children in Fundations. I was so impressed with how fast they were able to catch on. This is not an easy skill for Kindergarten students! First, I made each word on the board and said and tapped each sound. The students tapped with me. Next, we blended the sounds as we dragged our thumbs across our fingers and said the word. Below are some of the words we have been practicing in class. Feel free to review these words with your children.
- rat, rap, nip, fit, fig,
- lit, lip, sip, sit, set
- met, sun, rug, fog, log
- lap, nap, map, rag
- mop, mad, fun, fin
In addition, the children have begun to learn the proper letter formation for the uppercase letters A, B, C, and D.
In Math, your children practiced number writing using whiteboards. These are the different activities we completed:
-I clapped a certain number of times. Children wrote how many claps they heard.
-I held up a certain number of fingers. Children wrote that number on their whiteboards.
-I showed a number card and had the children write the number that came after or before the displayed number.
- I gave clues about a mystery number. The children wrote down what they thought the number was.
The next day, we reviewed how to sort shapes by attributes. The children sat in a circle as I spread the attribute blocks in the center. We talked about how these blocks may be sorted. We then sorted the blocks by each attribute- size, shape, and color. Next, I divided the class into small groups and gave each group a handful of same-colored blocks. The students were challenged to find another way to sort the blocks besides color and the children shared how they sorted their blocks.
On Thursday, we reviewed the terms addition and subtraction and solved some number stories using number models. I gave the children teddy bear counters to help them solve the problems. I've included the powerpoint presentation I used for this lesson below :)
Finally, I used two Number Cards (0-9) to create numbers for children to read. We even reversed the digits and compared the numbers too!
During Guided Reading, the children were introduced to 4 new literacy centers:
Tablets- Children read leveled texts and answered comprehension questions.
Math Center- Children counted by tens to put a snowman puzzle together on construction paper.
Word Work- Children completed a CVC word activity.
ABC Center- Children completed alphabet printables.
We observed a photograph of our Winter tree outside of our classroom on the board and the children shared what they noticed. Finally, they drew the tree in their science journals.
Take Care,
Miss Visicaro
