In Fundations, we continued to practice reading and "tapping out" our Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) words.
In addition, the children learned the proper letter formation for the uppercase letters A, B, C, and D. We also reviewed the corresponding lowercase letters, too!
We are working hard at identifying beginning, middle and ending sounds in our words. A great way to practice at home is to ask your child what beginning sounds they hear in words we use at home, such as bed, mom, dad, window, door, or table.
In Math, we worked with ten frames! I told the kiddos to imagine that each square was a seat on a bus and that exactly one bear could sit on each seat. I displayed a number on the board to show how many red bears got on at the bus stop. Then I asked how we could figure out how many blue bears must get on the bus to fill all 10 seats. They were so excited to tell me that I could count the empty seats! After modeling the activity, the children played in pairs, working together to figure out how to fill the bus and to record combinations on their recording sheets. Take a peek at the powerpoint presentation I created to reinforce combinations of ten at home :)

- Our classroom door (rectangle)
- Our welcome banner (triangles)
- The clock (circle)
- The floor tiles (sqaures)
- There were 6 coats hanging on hooks. Two children put on their coats. I think there are 4 coats still hanging on hooks. Am I right? How do you know?
After the children explained their thinking, I showed them how to draw a picture to help show their work and prove their answer.
Then, I read the next one:
- I was having a party. I put 4 chairs at the table. The doorbell rang, and I saw 7 friends at the door. Do I have enough chairs for all my friends? How do you know?
During Literacy, we learned all about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and spent some time sharing our dreams for the world. I was super impressed with the sweet dreams they came up with including everyone being kind, happy, playing nicely with others, having food and a home, etc. I told the children that Martin would be very happy with their dreams! We also read a Martin Luther King, Jr. poem and highlighted all of our sight words!
During Writer's Workshop we began our unit on "How To" books. How to books teach people how to do something. I shared some examples of how to books and then we brainstormed some ideas. I showed the children the how to book I made: How to make lemonade as well.
2. Add two more circles
3. You make one more circle
4. And add a smiley.
During Science, we wrapped up our unit on the Five Senses. We learned about our sense of smell. I walked around with two mystery smells while the children closed their eyes. The children sniffed each cotton swab and guessed what each sample was! Mystery smell number 1 was peppermint extract, and mystery smelll number 2 was lemon extract.
During Guided Reading/Literacy Centers, the children rotated through the following stations:
-Writing Center: Children continued working on their true stories.
-Math Center: Roll and Record with Dot Dice
-Play Dough Center: CVC Play dough mats
-Building Center: Children built CVC words with unifix cubes.
