I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful weather we had this week- I know I did!! I just love the warm weather so much :)
I want to start out by thanking Kiran's sister Lily for reading to our PM friends- The children always look forward to guest readers!
Also, a big thank you to Scarlett’s Dad for coming in to teach our PM friends about the harmful effects of smoking. They had a great time!
In Fundations, we practiced tapping out CVC words. We also found our current and new Trick Words in sentences. The following are the Trick Words we have learned so far:
• and
• are
• the
• to
• a
• is
• his
A great way to practice these words at home is to write them on flashcards. You could hide the words around the house and have your child find them and read them to you :) Why not make learning a game, right?
Also, I explained that when the /k/ sound is followed by the letters a, o, or u, the letter "c" is used (cat, cot, cut). Whenever the /k/ sound has an e or i after it, the word is spelled with a " k " (kit, kid). If you would like to practice this tricky skill with your child, I've included my powerpoint slides below :)
Next, we reviewed a variety of strategies, such as using your fingers, drawing a picture, counting on or back, and using a number line or grid. We also wrote number sentences to go along with each number story.
Finally, the children created their own number story for a class book. They did a great job!
To end the week, we played a game called Dice Addition. This game helped the kiddos practice adding small numbers quickly—something that takes lots of practice. Players rolled their dice, added the two numbers together and recorded the resulting addition equation (for example, 2 + 3 = 5).
On Monday, we read Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
After introducing my Fairytales anchor chart and reading the story, we discussed the characters and the setting. Next, I selected a child to retell the story using the pictures. Finally, the kiddos cut out the pictures and glued them in the correct order on a sentence strip to retell the story.
They also completed the writing prompt- "At the top of my beanstalk there would be _____. " Children then drew a picture to match their words.
- Write the Room: Children found and recorded -at family words on a recording sheet.
- ABC Center: Children practiced reading/writing different sight words.
- Writing Center: Children continued writing stories with a beginning, middle and end in their writing folders.
- Math Center: Children played memory match with 3-D shape cards.
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! One more week to go until Spring Break!!!!
Take Care,
Miss Visicaro
