This week we welcomed a new student in our AM class: Kylie. She is a great addition to our class and the children were beyond excited to meet her!
We also celebrated Anthony's birthday in the PM class- Thank you so much to Anthony's Mom for coming in to read :)
In Fundations, I explained that some books have stories that are pretend or make-believe and that these stories can be about people or animals. We revisited the story, Cod Fish, and determined that it was a make-believe story. Then, I explained that other books tell us facts about things and they teach us things that are true. To explain this further, I showed them a informational book about ants and told the students that this is a book that teaches us true things about ants. Before reading, we looked at the front and back cover of the book and discussed the title, author and illustrator. Then I read the book and after each page, I asked them to name one true fact they learned. They did a super job recalling the facts that intrigued them.
Also in Fundations we spent some time reading sentences and making changes to them. For example, I wrote "Tom sat on the log" on the board. Then, I had the students change the sentence to: Tom sat on the mat. We then tapped out the word to check the spelling together. I continued this process of dictating changes until our sentence read "Beth sat on the box."
The children also learned two new Trick Words: "of" and "have."
In Math, I introduced the "stopwatch" and explained that it is a tool that counts steady beats to measure how long something takes. We discussed that a second is a unit of time used by people around the world. Then, the kiddos predicted how long it would take to pass a "quiet friend" (plush toy) around our room. Then, we used the stopwatch to count the seconds to see how long it took. We tried this three times to see if we could "beat" our previous time. The children had a ball! To conclude the lesson, I connected seconds with minutes and explained that there are 60 seconds in one minute.
The next day, I introduced doubles and the students practiced drawing dots on their double ten frame mat to show doubles. They also wrote addition number sentences to match their doubles fact.
- Writing Center: Children wrote in their writing folder.
- Math Center: Children worked on their number scrolls.
- ABC Center- Children read simple sentences with CVC words and colored in the bubble that matched the picture.
- Tablets- Children read leveled texts on RAZ-Kids.
