The children also learned two new Trick Words: "or" and "for."
In Math, I introduced the terms height, width and area. I encouraged the kiddos to compare the height of two stuffed animals by standing them next to each other. We used connecting cubes to determine the difference in height by counting the "extras." Next, we decided which stuffed animal was wider and compared the difference by measuring the width of both with the cubes and counting the difference. For area, I traced around the two stuffed animals on a piece of chart paper so the children were able to see which took up more space.
Finally. we began our unit on Sunlight and Energy. The children learned they get their energy from the food they eat. The sun gives plants light and heat energy and when they eat vegetables or fruits, they get
that energy from the sun.
During Reading, I read "A Tiger Cub Grows Up." It is about a tiger cub named Tara who lives with other tigers in a wild animal park in California. After reading, the children practiced retelling the story in their own words using the photographs to help them. They also learned the following vocabulary words: wild, tame, creep and pounce.
During Writer's Workshop, we learned that transition words (i.e. one day, next, at the end) make our stories more interesting. I also explained that good writers often include feelings at the end of their stories. I was so impressed when I walked around the room and saw the children adding in feeling words :)
The next day, I explained that when writers are working to make their writing more readable, it helps if the writer has a partner who works with the writer, like a team, to get the job done. After the children had some time to write, they spent a few minutes reading their story to their partner. It was so sweet to see the children helping one another. They were like little teachers! "Make this letter uppercase...don't forget to add a period at the end...This word is spelled wrong..."
- Writing Center: the children wrote true stories in their writing folders.
- Write the Room: Children filled in the missing digraph sounds on their recording sheet.
- Math Center: Children measured farm animals with Unifix cubes.
- ABC Center: Children wrote different sight words and highlighted to vowels in each word.
This week, we welcomed two new students to our class- twins Ethan and Evan. We are so happy to have them in our class :)
Happy Mother's Day to all the mommies! I hope you all have a relaxing and enjoyable day with your families!
