In Fundations, the children were introduced to two new letters: v-van-/v/ and w-wind-/w/. They are so excited that we are almost at the end! Just a couple more letter to go!
This week, we focused on the final sound in words. I emphasized the last sound in several words and selected students to come get the standard sound card the ended with the last sound in the words. If they located the correct letter, they said the letter-keyword-sound and wrote the letter on the board following my verbalization.
In addition, I introduced the question mark to the children. I showed the students how to write a question mark and explained that the period is used when we tell something. The question mark is used when we ask something. We practiced reading sentences together and decided if they should end with a question mark or a period.
In Math, we worked on adding and subtracting using classroom objects (i.e. marbles, bears, buttons, dice) and a large bag. I placed some counters in the bag and then wrote the number on the board. Above the number, the children helped me count as I drew the corresponding number of dots to visually represent the number. I then added some more counters into the bag and wrote that number on the board with the dots on top. The children used a variety of strategies to solve how many counters were in the bag in all. Some children counted the total number of dots, while others put the first number in their head and counted on to get the total.
The next day, we worked with number cards 0-20. I randomly placed each card on the board. I challenged the children to work together to arrange the cards in numerical order. After this task was completed successfully, we used the number cards to play some games.
- I pointed to a number card and had the children write the number on their whiteboards.
- I pointed to a number and had the children write the number that came before or after it on their whiteboards.
- I clapped a number of times while the children silently counted and then wrote the appropriate number on their whiteboards.
The next two days, we learned about probability. I read "To Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street" and asked the children which events in the book were possible and which were impossible. We then charted examples of things that were certain, impossible, and possible. Check it out below! Also included below is the Powerpoint Presentation I shared with the children to reinforce probability :)
- Measuring with Unifix Cubes- Children used non-standard measurement to measure different classroom materials using cubes. Then students recorded their measurements on a recording sheet.
- ABC Center- Children matched uppercase letters to lowercase letters and identified the beginning sound.
- Thanksgiving Beginning Sounds Booklet- Children wrote the beginning sound for each page and colored the pictures.
- Thanksgiving Write the Room- Children walked around the room in search of Thanksgiving words and recorded them on their recording sheet.
- Thanksgiving Play Dough Mats-Children used play-dough to create turkey feathers, Thanksgiving food, etc.
Wishing you all a peaceful and relaxing weekend!
Many Blessings,
Miss Visicaro
