It was SUCH a pleasure to meet with each of you this week to discuss your child’s progress. Thank you for taking time out of your day to meet with me!
Although we had a short week, it was packed with a lot of fun!
In Fundations, I collected objects that ended with the letters taught so far and put them in a big shopping bag. I then called on a student to pick something out of the bag. I asked the student what they pulled out and had them find the letter that ends the word. Next, they said the letter-keyword-sound and the class repeated. Finally, the student wrote the letter following my verbalization on our class writing grid.
As a follow up from last week, I displayed a sentence using our sentence frames that asked a question. I modeled how to read question sentences, making sure to make my voice go up at the end. Then after we choral read the sentence together, I erased the sentence and put the frames in a column on the board. I selected a student to put the frames in order so I could successfully write the sentence "Do you like candy?" After the sentence was written, the children helped me read it as the student pointed to each word with the pointer.
Finally, I read the story "Baby Echo Flies" once more for the children and modeled retelling the story using pictures that I drew. I explained to the children that my version of the story was not identical to the story I had just read to them but it is similar. I then challenged the students to come up and retell the story as they pointed to the pictures. I was super impressed with their retellings! Each child's version was unique as well!
In Literacy, we began our "Families" Unit. I read “Families in Many Cultures”and asked the children to share information about their families (number of siblings, pets, etc).
I then shared my illustration of my family and labeled each family member. The next day, the children drew a picture of their family in their journals and labeled each member to the best of their ability. I also encouraged the children to write a sentence about their families as well. They were so excited to point out siblings, grandparents, pets and mommy and daddy, of course!
In math, we worked together to weigh different classroom materials using a pan balance scale. We reviewed what it means when one pan is lower than the other and what it means when the pans are level. After showing the children the objects I selected for weighing, the children made predictions on which objects they thought were heavier. We then tested our predictions and circled the heavier objects on a recording sheet.
If you are looking for enrichment activities over the break, I’ve included some favorite websites at the bottom of this blog; and there is of course RAZ-KIDS!!
Wishing you all a peaceful and relaxing Thanksgiving with good food, family and friends!
Many Blessings,
Miss Visicaro
