I'm sure you've all heard by now that your child saw a real firetruck up close and personal on Friday. They couldn't contain their excitement when I told them they would be able to meet real firefighters! I was so proud of your little ones during our fire safety assembly yesterday. Not only did they sit nicely during the entire presentation, but two of the AM kindergarteners were chosen to "Stop, Drop, and Roll" in front of a large crowd! Very exciting!!
In Math, we also colored number boards to show the numbers 0-10. For each number, we counted out the appropriate number of boxes to be colored. When I asked the children what they noticed about the board, we discovered that every number is one larger than the number before it. They also told me it looked like a "staircase" and a "triangle".
In Literacy, we started off the week by learning all about Christopher Columbus and why we celebrate Columbus Day each year. After reading a story about Christopher Columbus, we did some Columbus themed syllable sorting! I held up a picture and challenged the children to tell me what or who it was by using the picture clue. Then, we repeated the word and clapped the number of syllables together. Finally, I chose a child to come up and place the picture under the correct number of syllables on our pocket chart. They did a fantastic job!
• How has the tree changed?
• What do you see now?
• What color were the leaves in the summer?
• What color are they now?
Then, the children worked in their science journals. They colored the picture that looked like fall and circled the word Fall. On the next page, they drew their Fall tree. They did such a nice job drawing the different colored leaves and some even drew some falling on the ground!
• Math Center: Children played Top- It with Dot Cards
• Independent Reading: Children read simple texts in our reading nook. They even got to choose a “Reading Buddy” (stuffed animal) to read with.
• Write the Room: Children walked around the room and recorded fire safety words on their recording sheets.
• Journals: Children wrote true stories in their journals by stretching out the sounds they heard.
• Guided Reading Group-- I reviewed the front of the book, the back of the book, the spine, the title, the author and the illustrator. After reviewing some sight words, and reading some sight word sentences, we took a picture walk and discussed how to use pictures to help us with the words in the book. We also looked at the beginning sounds of words to see if we could figure out what the words on the page could be.
Warm Regards,
Mrs. Nork
