I am excited to share all the fun we had in Kindergarten this week. To start off the week, the children learned all about Christopher Columbus and why we celebrate Columbus Day each year.
After reading a story about Christopher Columbus, we did some Columbus themed syllable sorting! I held up a picture and challenged the children to tell me what or who it was by using the picture clue. Then, we repeated the word and clapped the number of syllables together. Finally, I chose a child to come up and place the picture under the correct number of syllables on our pocket chart. They did a fantastic job!
In Science, the children observed a fall tree and answered the following questions:
- How has the tree changed?
- What do you see now?
- What color were the leaves in the summer?
- What color are they now?
The next day, the children were introduced to sorting. I showed the children a pile of crayons and asked them how we could sort them into like categories. One child suggested we could sort them by color. The children watched as I sorted to crayons by color using my sorting mat. Then, I cleared my mat and asked if we could sort the crayons a different way. Another child suggested we could sort by size. This time, the children told me where to place each crayon. One box on the sorting mat was for the large crayons and the other was for the small crayons. They did such a great job with this!
Next, I shared my Sorting Poster with the children and explained the different ways we could sort. Finally, I paired off the children and challenged them to sort pattern blocks/bears however they wanted with their partner. They were excited to share how they sorted their manipulatives! Take a look at all our sorting fun below!
Well, that about wraps up our week! Our first half-day on Friday was a huge success! The children were so excited to see some of their friends from the other class! They were excited to spend Morning Meeting together too :)
I will leave you with some pictures of the children practicing writing their name. I created these name sheets for the children to take out when they are finished with their morning work and they have worked like a charm! I have seen SUCH a huge improvement with their name writing. Thank you to all of you for working with your child on their name at home as well!
Best,
Miss Visicaro
