I am excited to share all the fun we had in Kindergarten this week. To start off the week, the children learned all about Christopher Columbus and why we celebrate Columbus Day each year. In math class, we worked together to complete a Columbus themed graphing activity with tally marks. This is a very hard skill for young children to grasp but your kiddos surprised me (yet again) with their amazing graphing abilities! We also played a little math game to help with counting!
- I had the children stand in a circle and chose a target number (20). The first child began counting with one. The pattern continued around the circle with each child saying the next number in sequence. The child who said the target number sat down and the count began again at one. The seated child was skipped as the count continued around the circle with another child sitting each time the target number was reached. We kept counting around the circle until all the children were sitting.
In Fundations, I introduced the next two letters- a and g. The g was particularly exciting for the children because it is the first letter in Fundations that reaches the "worm" line. I explained to the children that letter g is written just like letter a but the line keeps on going until it reaches the worm that gets "hooked" on the fishing line. We also learned that names begin with capital letters no matter where they are in a sentence and practiced clapping the syllables in special Halloween words. I took it a step further and asked them what the word would be if I took away the first syllable in scarecrow and they were excited to blurt out "It would be crow!!"
During Guided Reading, the children rotated through 5 centers:
- Word Work- Students practiced identifying sight words by placing pompoms on sight word mats and then recording them on recording sheets.
- Tablets/Listening Center: Students read/listened to leveled texts on RAZ kids at their designated independent reading level.
- Play Dough: Children used play dough to form previously introduced letters.
- Number Writing- Children used dry erase markers to practice writing numbers 1-9 on dry erase boards.
Other activities we did this week include learning a "tricky teen" rap song, reading about fall leaves and making "Leaf People," creating a Fall colors book, and working in groups to create Halloween teen number puzzles.
I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend! Please note that if your children log on to RAZ-Kids (I sent home a letter with their username and password) there is an assignment from me as well as a voice message :) They can earn points by reading the books I assign/books in their book room! Happy Reading!
I am also sad to share that one of our students, Morgan, is now in the afternoon Kindergarten Class. We will miss her tons but wish her well :)
Love,
Miss Visicaro
