In Fundations we introduced two new letters, d-dog-/d/ and s-snake- /s/. In addition to our Drill Sounds, Vowel Extensions, Magnetic Journals, and Dry Erase Boards/Student Notebooks, we practiced capitalizing names in sentences, and worked more with syllables and rhyming words.
In Math, I modeled how to count objects that were in a set (or group) by placing seven children (fish) in a row in my pretend pond (carpet). I told the class they would play the "Gotcha" game by catching me making a counting mistake (example: saying the number words in the wrong order, not saying one number word for each child I point to, saying the wrong number for the total of the set). First, I counted the children correctly, tapping each child as I counted. Then, I put the same seven children in a circle and counted them, intentionally miscounting by counting the first child a second time at the end. The children explained my counting error and we discussed ways to keep track of where to begin and end counting. They suggested that the first child should raise his hand to avoid counting the same child more than once. Finally, I randomly scattered the seven children and intentionally miscounted again and had the children explain my error. When I asked for some strategies they told me each child could stand up as I count them.
Then, the children learned all about rectangles. We compared the square and the rectangle and discussed what is the same about these shapes and what is different. Click on the file below to see my rectangle powerpoint presentation I shared with the kiddos.
