In Math, we learned all about symmetry and how we discover if a figure is symmetrical or not. I explained, for something to be symmetrical, it must be the same on both sides when you fold it in half. I demonstrated by folding a sheet of paper in half and then unfolding it. On one half of the paper, I placed dabs of paint. I refolded the paper while the paint was still wet and gently pressed and smoothed. I opened the paper and asked the children what they noticed when they looked at both sides of the paper. They screamed, "They are the same!" To reinforce the concept some more, I showed the following video titled, "Symmetry and Symmetrical Figures" and the children sorted die-cut shapes into two categories- symmetrical and non-symmetrical by folding their shapes in half and seeing if the sides matched.
In addition, we practiced number writing by working in our number books. The children traced each number (0-10) in pencil and used stickers to represent the corresponding number of objects in the box on each page. We also created pattern necklaces by stringing colored beads in patterns. The children were very proud of their necklaces and couldn't wait to take them home!
In Literacy, the children completed Fall Small Moment stories by continuing to practice adding details to their illustrations, labeling their illustrations with the first sound they hear, and stretching out the sounds they hear to complete a sentence about their illustration. The next day, I introduced a story map to the children. I read "The Lonely Scarecrow" and together we discussed the characters, setting, problem and solution. They did a fantastic job with this!!
Finally, I read "In a Dark Dark Wood." I explained that the children would create an alternate ending to the story. The children drew their ending on black construction paper using our special crayons (oil pastels). The words to the story were attached to the front. When everyone was done, we choral read the story and each child blurted out their ending together. I attached my example below!
- Tablets- Children read leveled texts on RAZ-Kids at their independent reading levels.
- Halloween Books- Children wrote what they see on Halloween by using picture clues and writing the sounds they heard.
- Teen Number Cover up- Children spun a teen number and put a counter on that number. They played until all numbers were covered up.
- Addition game- Children spun a spinner and put that amount of ladybugs on the first leaf. They spun again and repeated on the second leaf. They added together the total lady bugs.
