I'm sure you've all heard by now that your children were able to see a real life firetruck up close and personal this morning. They couldn't contain their excitement when I told them they would be able to meet real firefighters! I was so proud of your little ones during our fire safety assembly today. Not only did they sit nicely during the entire presentation, but they also answered some of the firefighters questions in front of a large crowd. They are all so smart!!!! I am so proud of them all!
To get ready for the assembly today, the children learned all about fire safety the past couple of days. We read several books including "Stop, Drop, and Roll" as well as wrote in our journals about what we knew about firetrucks. We also made cute little firedog hats. The children wore them proudly and "barked" all the way to the bus! Thank you all for spending time with your children to discuss your meeting place in case of a fire. Many of the children shared their meeting place was their mailbox or a nearby tree. Check out some of our fire safety pictures below:
In math, the children were introduced to our shape posters. For each shape, the children did the following:
- Named the shape and drew the shape in the air with large arm motions.
- Walked around the outline of the shapes and Identified if it had straight sides or curved sides.
- Described the shape (number of sides, corners, compared length of sides)
- Generated a list of objects that looked like or reminded them of each shape.
- Practiced drawing shapes on whiteboards.
In addition, the children learned position words. I introduced this concept by sharing the video: Where's the Monkey. The children loved it so much I shared it with you below :)
Following the video, we read “Where is the Apple?” as a class (also shared below). The children wowed me with their amazing reading. They used the picture clues to help them read the words! I created 5 copies of this book for our classroom browsing baskets. The children love reading this story after snack. Finally, I gave a "quiet friend" (plush toy) to each child. I then used spatial vocabulary as I gave directions to position the toy (i.e. place your quiet friend on top of your head, in front of you, under your legs, next to your friend, between your knees). It was so rewarding to hear all the giggles and excitement in the room.
