In Fundations, the children continued to practice writing letters m and n by participating in class skywriting activities, using letter tiles to match letter sounds, and drilling sounds with Echo the Owl. Not only have they been doing an excellent job remembering all of our letter-keyword-sound cards, but they also played an important role in helping me "act out" the story titled "Echo Finds Dinner." Instead of reading the words, I acted out the story using Echo. The children retold this familiar story in their own words based on the motions made by Echo. Believe it or not, the version they told was better than the original!! I included the story for your viewing in case you want to discuss it with your child!
In math, the children explored patterns. To introduce the concept of patterns, I created a sound pattern for the children to replicate and extend (i.e. clap, clap, stomp, stomp). They were so excited to join in! Some of them were even brave enough to create their own sound/motion pattern for the class to replicate! Our most popular pattern was bending over and standing up :)
The very next day we explored simple color patterns. The children were given "Beary Pattern Cards" to create AB, ABC, ABB and AABB patterns using bear counter manipulatives.
In Literacy, we wrapped up our Gingerbread Man unit by listening to one last version of the story and completing a sequencing activity in which the children had to determine what happened first, second, and third. They worked really hard carefully cutting out their pictures, pasting them in the correct spot, and taking their time to color inside the lines. The children learned the importance of taking their time on their coloring rather than rushing through it to get done first.
We began our next unit titled "Me" this week as well. I read "I Like Me" by Nancy Carlson and we discussed what we like about ourselves. The children then began working on their "Me" book. They were busy drawing detailed pictures about their favorite food, toy, what makes them happy, what makes them sad, what color eyes they have, and what color hair they have. I also instructed them to label their illustrations by writing the first sound they heard underneath their drawing. These turned out adorable and the children are very proud of them.
In Guided Reading/Literacy Centers, the children rotated between 5 stations as I pulled students to assess their letter sound knowledge. The stations were as follows:
- Journals: Children used "kid writing" and prompt cards to create a new entry in their journal. They added a detailed picture to accompany their writing.
- Uppercase/Lowercase letter match: Children matched lowercase letters with the corresponding uppercase letters.
- Write the room: children found various objects in the room and wrote them on their "Write the Room" recording page.
- Wiki sticks: children used wiki sticks to form uppercase and lowercase letters.
- Handwriting strokes: children practiced tracing various lines using proper pencil grip.
Finally, I wanted to share with you our new classroom rug! After waiting and waiting, it finally arrived!!
