"I'm going to be a cat!" said another child proudly.
"This is the best month ever!" another child commented.
Those are the reactions I received after I told the children it was October. They could not be any more excited. We then looked at our blank calendar and marked Halloween so the children were able to see when Halloween was coming :) Oh, the joys of teaching Kindergarten.
To wrap up the month of September, the children opened up their new science journals and tallied the number of sunny days, rainy days, cloudy days, partly cloudy days, and windy days. We analyzed our data and concluded that during the month of September we had the most partly cloudy days.
In Fundations, the children were introduced to letters i and u. We spent a lot of time talking about vowels and how important they are. Ask them to sing the "vowel song" to you :) I've included it below!
Next, I passed out one shape card to each child. I gave them time to look closely at their shape and describe it to a partner. Then the children answered the following questions:
- Does your shape remind you of anything?
- Do you see anything in the classroom that looks like your shape?
- Why do you think that object looks like your shape? How are they alike? Different?
- How are your shape and your partners shape different? Alike?
In my small group, the children sorted letters and words. I then went through a number of assorted letters and simple high frequency words. Then, we practiced writing our two new sight words "I" and "see" on dry erase boards, and echo read a story titled "What Can I see?" using finger pointers to help with tracking. The children looked at picture clues and the first letter to help figure out the word.
